The Health Risk of Lead Pipes
Lead is a neurotoxin. There is no safe level of lead exposure. When water sits in lead pipes overnight or flows through them during the day, lead dissolves into the water. When you drink that water, lead enters your bloodstream and accumulates in your body over time.
Lead exposure damages brain development in children, causing reduced IQ, learning difficulties, attention problems, and developmental delays. In pregnant women, lead crosses the placenta and damages the developing fetus. Adults can experience high blood pressure, kidney damage, and reproductive problems from chronic lead exposure.
The NHS, US EPA, and World Health Organization all recommend replacing lead pipes as a priority health measure. If you have young children or are pregnant, lead pipe replacement should be at the top of your home improvement list.
Is My House at Risk?
Lead pipes were standard in UK water supply installations until the mid-1970s. If your property was built before 1970, you almost certainly have a lead supply pipe from the water mains to your home.
Even if your interior plumbing has been updated to copper, the supply pipe buried underground from the mains shutoff to your house is likely still lead. This is the pipe that matters — it delivers the water that fills your kettle, your child's bottle, and your cooking pots.

Testing Your Water for Lead
You can request a water quality test to check for lead. A sample is sent to a laboratory and results arrive within a few days. Home test kits are available but professional laboratory testing is more reliable. If your test shows lead above WHO guidelines (10 μg/L), pipe replacement is recommended.
Water company records may not show your supply pipe material — they only know the mains connection. The safest assumption for pre-1970 properties is that the supply pipe is lead.
Lead Pipe Replacement
Replacement is straightforward: the old lead pipe is removed from the point where it enters your property, all the way to the mains connection underground. A new copper or plastic (MDPE) supply pipe is installed to current water authority standards.
The job typically takes 4–6 hours. We handle excavation, removal, new installation, testing under pressure, flushing to clear any contaminants, and full reinstatement of your driveway or garden above. Some water companies offer grants toward the cost of replacement — we can advise on eligibility.
