Why Early Detection Matters
A drain blockage that's caught early — when flow is slow but not yet stopped — can usually be cleared with a single professional jetting visit. The same blockage left until it causes flooding can damage floor joists, contaminate surface water, and require CCTV investigation plus repairs to a fractured pipe. Early signs are worth taking seriously.
The 7 Warning Signs
-
Slow drainage
Water draining slowly from a sink, bath, or shower is the earliest and most common sign. If a single fixture is slow, the blockage is local — likely in the trap or waste pipe. If multiple fixtures are slow simultaneously, the problem is in the main drain.
-
Gurgling sounds
A gurgling noise after water drains — particularly from a toilet or floor gully — indicates air being forced through a partial blockage. The sound means the drain is still moving water but under restriction.
-
Foul smell
Drain odour coming up through a plug hole or gully means decomposing material is accumulating in the pipe. In kitchen drains, this is usually a grease build-up. In outdoor drains, it may indicate a partial collapse trapping debris.
-
Water backing up
Water rising in a toilet bowl when you flush another toilet, or backing up into a bath when you run the kitchen sink, indicates a main drain blockage downstream of both fixtures.
-
Raised water level in inspection chambers
Check your outside inspection chambers (drain inspection covers, usually found in the garden or near the house wall). If the water level is high or the chamber is surcharging, the main drain has a blockage downstream of that point.
-
Damp patches on walls or floors
A slow leak from a cracked or displaced drain joint caused by root ingress or ground movement can appear as persistent damp on a ground floor or basement wall. CCTV survey is the only way to confirm this diagnosis.
-
Unusually green or lush grass
A patch of lawn that is noticeably greener and more vigorous than surrounding areas often indicates a leaking drain below — the nutrient-rich drain water acting as fertiliser. This is a sign of a structural defect that needs investigation.

What to Do
Signs 1–3 (slow drainage, gurgling, smell) indicate an early-stage blockage that can usually be cleared quickly and cheaply with professional jetting. Signs 4–7 indicate a more developed problem that warrants a CCTV survey to confirm the cause before clearing — because clearing a blockage caused by a structural defect without addressing the defect means it will recur.
Call us on 0800 019 0073 if you're seeing any of these signs — we'll advise whether you need a jetting visit, a CCTV survey, or both.
