Winter Frozen Pipes in Manchester: Prevention & Emergency Thawing
Manchester winters bring temperatures that can freeze water inside pipes, causing them to expand and burst. A burst pipe from freezing can flood your property within hours, causing thousands in damage. Prevention is far simpler than dealing with the aftermath.
Why Pipes Freeze in Winter
Water expands by approximately 9% when it freezes. In a confined pipe, this expansion creates pressure that can crack or burst the pipe. Pipes most at risk are those in unheated spaces: lofts, garages, under porches, or along external walls.
Prevention: The Best Strategy
Insulate Exposed Pipes
- Wrap pipes with foam pipe insulation (£1-3 per meter)
- Pay special attention to loft pipes and external runs
- Use heat tape for critically exposed sections
- Seal gaps around pipes entering your home
Maintain Heat Flow
- Keep your home heated to at least 12-15°C during winter
- Don't turn heating off completely when away for extended periods
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach pipes
- Keep loft hatches closed to trap heat
During Cold Snaps
- Let taps run slowly overnight — flowing water is harder to freeze
- Drip water from external taps during severe freezing
- Close external shutters or cover hose connections
Warning Signs of Frozen Pipes
- No water flow from a tap, or reduced flow
- Frost visible on the outside of pipes
- Unusual smell from drains (ice blockage)
- Water backing up in toilets or sinks
What to Do If a Pipe Freezes
Do NOT: Use a blowtorch or direct flame — it risks fire and can cause the pipe to burst explosively.
Do:
- Turn off the water at the main stopcock immediately
- Apply gentle heat using a hairdryer, heat lamp, or hot water bottles
- Wrap the pipe in towels and pour warm (not boiling) water over them
- Open the affected tap to relieve pressure
- Contact a drainage engineer for severe cases
If a Pipe Bursts
